Shanghai Surprise
Marrying Buddha by Wei Hui – Book Review
Jan 17th 2012, 12:39

This book is something of a sequel to the author’s phenomenally successful Shanghai Baby. It features the same character, Coco, a successful novelist, and the book itself is semi-autobiographical. She meets the charismatic Muju, half Italian, half Japanese, falls in love with him and some of his eccentric ways, while others clearly annoy her. The tale is set in Fuxing Street, Shanghai, and New York, with occasional sojourns to the Spanish speaking world. It would seem that Coco could not be happier, but then she meets the urbane New Yorker, Nick, who is younger and better looking than George Clooney, as he runs his hands through his thick dark hair, quite often, and things really begin to hot up. I have seen this book described as soft porn. It certainly isn’t that, but the writer doesn’t hold back in explaining her relationships with Muju and Nick. Some people might just describe it as growing up. The book is easy to read, something of a page turner too, and we could imagine it stuffed into many a holiday travel bag, beach reading at its lightest. One thing we did find rather surprising was the large number of typing errors there are. If an independent press produced a book with as many, or heaven forbid, a self published work came out like this, there would be no mercy from the critics, who would pounce on such carelessness with great glee. But this comes from a publisher whose history goes all the way back to 1795, and no one seems to bat an eyelid at that. Perhaps the critics of self published and independently produced works should show a little more patience and leniency with their pens in this area. Rant over! I thank you. Did we enjoy Marrying Buddha? Yes, we did, very much as it happens, and we’d recommend it as a light holiday diversion, but is it any more than that? Why not read it and find out for yourself?

Lighting
Stylish, Modern Home Lighting Options
Jan 17th 2012, 15:29

Stylish, modern home lighting cannot be ignored when it comes to creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. All the nice furnishings, decorative items and even wall colors and floor materials are accentuated by the soft, yet radiant, glow of stylish lighting. Often times, the fixtures from where that light originates play an equally important role in the selected room’s ambiance, so choosing the correct fixture to house the light is just as important as choosing which type of light and what strength of wattage will be used. If providing various moods is the goal, as would be in a living room, den or bedroom, then there are certain lighting options that might be considered for these living spaces. Traditional lamps strategically placed around the room with various bulb wattages or containing 3-way bulbs is a common option. Other lighting fixtures on the rise in popularity are sconces and Torchiere lamps which direct the glow of the light upwards where it is reflected softly off the ceiling. Another option making a comeback but with technological advances are track lights. Running track lighting around a home bar or entertainment area is quite versatile because you can choose how many lights the track contains, how many are turned on at any time and in to which areas they are directed. A similar option would be to apply strip lights which now come with peel and stick adhesive backing for extreme ease of installation. If the objective is to provide bright illumination to a kitchen, home office or garage work area then traditional large ceiling mounted fixtures would be the way to go. These now come in various stylish designs which add extra appeal to any room’s décor while offering plenty of eye-pleasing light for the work at hand. Where light is being blocked by wall hung cabinets causing shadowed areas in a work space, a hidden, yet direct, light source can be added through under cabinet lighting. This not only provides the extra light for the area but also offers a touch of elegance to the room. Of course, if accentuating certain treasures, photos or rewards is the goal then installing puck lights, LED strip lights or small under cabinet lights could meet the need wonderfully. These fixtures direct their light source towards a particular space to give the intended object full illumination thereby commanding full attention. The exterior of the home, also, can be accommodated with beautiful, bright and stylish lighting fixtures. From traditional coach lanterns to more modernistic globe or dome lights, options are available to brighten the outside of the home providing a warm welcome to guests and a deterrent to trespassers. Whatever the need, a wide selection of lighting sources and fixtures are available to give each room that extra kiss of elegance it deserves.
