How to Clean Antique Furniture
Jan 21st 2012, 19:06

Grandma goofed? Imagine that your great-grandmother owned a lovely mahogany buffet. She loved the piece; she waxed it twice a year and dusted it regularly, which was the highest standard of care in her day. Would great-grandmother be shocked to discover that her regular waxing and dusting created the dingy, dirty finish that is on the buffet in 2010? Antiques Are Covered With Old Wax and Dirt You see, once you put wax onto wooden furniture, the only way to get it off is with a chemical remover. Each time the furniture is waxed, you put new wax on top of dirty wax and just move it all around. Every time the piece is dusted, some of the dust is picked up by the dust cloth, and some of it is rubbed into the accumulated wax. Over time, the finish begins to lose its’ shine and become dingy looking. The once-beautiful buffet becomes covered with a layer of dirt and wax. The Wax and Dirt Must Be Removed The key to cleaning antique furniture is to remove the old wax and accumulated dirt without damaging the underlying finish. This can be accomplished with a little patience and few supplies which can be purchased at any hardware store. Simply re-waxing the furniture or applying furniture polish will only add to the problem; if you want the antique to glow, you must remove the old wax and dirt. Of course, this cleaning technique assumes that the furniture’s finish is still intact; a finish with significant chipping and peeling should be refinished. Your Antique Furniture Cleaning Kit The first item needed is a solvent that will remove the wax without removing the furniture finish. The solvent for wax is mineral spirits, and mineral spirits will not harm any of the finishes commonly found on antiques. Next, you will need 0000 (“four-ought”) grade steel wool; other grades are too coarse. In the refinishing trade, 0000 steel wool is known as a polishing pad; the longer you rub a finish with it, the shinier the finish gets. You will need Q-tips, absorbent rags, and a bucket of water or a sink. For the final polishing, you will use a burnishing cream. Liberon makes a fine burnishing cream that can be purchased from several online distributors. The Cleaning Technique Begin by pouring about a half-cup of mineral spirits directly onto the furniture’s top. Using the 0000 steel wool spread the solvent over about a two-foot square area. Always rub in a straight line in the direction of the wood grain; rubbing across the grain will create visible scratches. Apply a slight downward pressure to the steel wool; your objective is to loosen the wax. Continue this procedure over the entire piece of furniture, using as much mineral spirits as is needed to keep the surface wet. The drying time for mineral spirits is about 45 minutes. As the solvent dries, you will notice a dirty grayish film forming over the furniture. This film is the loosened, dirty wax that you have lifted from the surface. When the solvent has thoroughly dried, use a damp rag to wipe up the dried wax. Clean the rag often. Use Q-tips to get into corners and grooves. Repeat the above procedure with mineral spirits and clean steel wool until no more waxy dirt dries on the surface. When the furniture is free of wax and dirt, apply the burnishing cream with a soft cloth, and rub until you are satisfied with the shine. Ongoing Maintenance To keep your antique furniture beautiful, polish it once a year with a good quality cream polish. If the finish is significantly worn and you have a few bare spots, treat the bare spots with a light coat of paste wax to protect the wood. Dust regularly. Never use spray polishes, dusting sprays, treated dusting cloths, or any product that touts its ability to make your furniture shine. Chances are those products contain silicone, and polishing your furniture with silicone is like spraying it with WD-40 lubricant. Proper care will keep your antique furniture looking beautiful for future generations.

China Threatens to Downgrade US Debt But What’s the Real Reason?
Jan 21st 2012, 23:59

Most folks miss all the interesting stuff affecting our economy in the news, but you shouldn’t let it get by you. Just recently way back on page 5 of the financial news there was a rather important article which was hidden from view. It is important enough to make a note of, it was regarding China’s dealings with the US as a trading partner. In fact, I see a rather alarming pattern, albeit also predictable when it comes to economic dealings, trade negotiation, and playing fair, when China is involved. Perhaps, you saw the APEX Meeting in Hawaii on TV and the comments generated between China’s President Hu and President Obama, well, there was a reciprocal response from the Chinese Central Bank just following that incident, and it was rather childish in my opinion. There was an interesting article, along this same topic in China Economic Times Review on November 14, 2011 titled; “China Rating Agency Warns of US Debt Downgrade” and I say to that “go for it” but it will only make your rating agency look silly and hypocritical, especially as we watch the EuroZone collapse and massive amounts of money flow to safety; namely the USA. This threat sure looks a lot like a political power play and payback from the APEX meeting where President Obama warned Chinese President Hu that we expected fair and honest trade with no cheating and an end to currency manipulation. Especially at a time when China posted yet another steep increase in trade deficits. Anyway the article above stated; “Dagong Global, a subsidiary of the central bank and the only Chinese agency to issue ratings on foreign sovereign debt, downgraded the US rating from AA to A+ in 2010, then downgraded it again to A in August. Only a few days later, Standard & Poor’s also downgraded US debt.” Okay so, let me get this straight, this is the third time Dagong downgraded US Debt, and Dagong is a “subsidiary of China’s Central Bank” and thus, you can’t tell me this coincidental downgrade is not political payback. Apparently, Beijing has stooped to a new low, but it’s not fooling anyone. Dagong has now lost all credibility with me as a part-time global financial and geopolitical analyst for our think tank. This move is nothing short of a back-stab to America, China’s largest customer, and it is very close to being an attempt at economic warfare and a shot across the bow in my view.. If this continues, at some point it will anger the American Consumers and could even lead to a boycott Mainland China products, that would not be good for either nation right now. President Obama told Hu that the US Consumer and Business Community was getting frustrated, and that was an understatement, people here are very upset, not frustrated, at least that is what I am hearing in coffee shops, in and around California and reading online. We’ve even watched the GOP Presidential candidates mention it, why? Because their constituents are concerned and they’ve been talking to the public whil traveling the country to get votes, this is what they are hearing too. You see, President Obama was being nice, it is getting much worse with regards to angry Americans right now, and this sort of maneuver on China’s part looks like a warning for Americans to back off, but it is things like this that anger the American People, small businesses, and many of our corporations. I believe, and this is my opinion, that China has showed its true face and colors in this downgrade, as it is a purposeful attempt on Beijing’s part and the timing shows that China wants to up the ante in this trade war, but there is no war, we just would like China to play fairly. If not, then may I ask why the US should continue trading and buying China products? How does that help me, my family, or my country to be a customer of Chinese goods? China needs to work with the US in a win-win trade arrangement, because right now – it is win-lose, and the US is getting the short end of the stick, and thus, it’s not worth playing anymore in my opinion. Think on this.

Where Does All Your Trash Go?
Jan 22nd 2012, 01:32

On average, Americans produce about 1,600 pounds (726 kg) of garbage per person per year. To cut down all that trash, make sure that you are following the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. What happens to the waste that garbage trucks collect? In the United States, most trash is taken to landfills. Other trash is transported to incinerators, where it is burned for energy. LANDFILLS are sites that are carefully designed to prevent dangerous waste from escaping into the soil and getting into groundwater. A thick layer of clay or plastic separates the garbage from the ground, and every day workers add a layer of soil to cover the trash on top. Liquid waste, called leachate, is pumped to the surface, where it is treated and made safe. Sadly, landfills are expensive and can be bad for the environment. Materials deposited in landfills often do not decompose quickly, and the waste releases harmful methane gas into the environment as it breaks down. Fact: Some landfills collect the methane gas produced from their trash, treat it and then sell it as fuel. WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANTS burn garbage to create energy. The trash is put into the plants’ incinerators, where it burns down to about 10% of its original volume. The energy created by this process heats water, which is turned into steam, which generates electricity. Because burning waste results in harmful CO2 gases, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that waste-to-energy plants comply with certain rules abut capturing those emissions. What Does Biodegradable Really Mean? A biodegradable product has the ability to break down (decompose) safely, quickly and naturally. Many biodegradable products that are sent to landfills, however, do not decompose quickly, because there’s too much trash there and not enough air. Some of the least biodegradable products include: disposable diapers, aluminum cans (You can recycle these.), tin cans, plastic bags, film canisters, glass bottles (\You can recycle these too!) and styrofoam cups. Tips to Reduce Trash - Try not to buy more than you need. - Avoid products with a lot of packaging. - Try to fix broken items rather than immediately replacing them. - Donate your old toys, clothes and furnitures to charity or community organizations. A Waste-Wise City Hamburg, Germany, provides a good example of what a city can do to decrease waste. The city has invested money in incinerators that have special filters to prevent harmful gases from escaping. The energy generated by the burning of trash is used to heat nearby homes. Ten years ago, Hamburg produced 1.6 million tons of waste and recycled less than 3% of it. Today, the city generates only 1.4 million tons and recycles nearly 60% of its waste.

Online Degrees – The Essential Top Tips to Consider Before Taking a Course
Jan 22nd 2012, 05:03

It’s official – Online degrees are now in the mainstream with the recently estimated demand for online learning at 20 million students. So if you’re thinking of embarking on an online course, you’re not alone. However before you start filling out forms and buying pens and notebooks, here are a few thoughts to consider: What course should I take? This depends on whether you’re taking the course to get a job or just as an interest. If a specific career is what you’re after, the right courses can either be obvious (BSc in Nursing to be a Nurse) or something more obscure, for instance a Criminal Justice degree can lead to careers such as Police Officer, CSI, Police Investigator. If on the other hand you’re taking a degree as a hobby, you will be surprised at the wide range of courses available; chances are if you’re interested in it, there’s an online course available! Do I have the work ethic? Any useful online degree is not going to be a simple walk in the park. It will require time, commitment and dedication in the same way as any degree. You will have to find time to work on assignments and get through reading lists the same as any other college student. However, online degrees have a great advantage in flexibility over traditional courses. The way that the courses are organised means you can do as much as you have time for in a week – the only difference being how long it takes you to complete the degree How high do I want to take my studies? You’ve no doubt seen all the acronyms – AA, BSc, MA, MBA etc. Put simply, each of these is a different level of degree and how high you go really depends on your career ambitions. The standard for most things is a Bachelor’s degree, though if you’re feeling particularly academic there is a lot of scope to go further. What is it going to cost me? The prices vary depending on a number of factors, such as course level, type of course and also between institutions – so shop around. Online degrees will be inherently cheaper owing to all campus related fees being non existent. An interesting recent development is that Distance learning Degrees are now eligible for the same financial support as traditional programs, so the overall cost of the program will be considerably lower than a traditional degree. Here is my summary of Financial Support
